PromptLayer Announces our $4.8M Seed Round

Software development is being fundamentally reshaped by AI, but the biggest challenge isn't technical expertise – it's domain knowledge. The next generation of AI products will be built by doctors, lawyers, and educators, not just machine learning engineers.

We're excited to announce that PromptLayer has raised $4.8 million (covered in TechCrunch) in funding led by Ivan Bercovich at ScOp VC and Peter Boyce II at Stellation Capital, with participation from Ben Lang, Thales Partners, Verissimo Ventures, alongside an exceptional group of angel investors including Joshua Browder, CEO of DoNotPay; Romain Huet, Head of Developer Experience at OpenAI; Logan Kilpatrick, Product Lead for Google AI Studio; Gokul Rajaram; Aparna Chennapragada, CVP at Microsoft AI; Joe Teplow, SVP at Salesforce Labs; Gabriel Stengel, CEO of Rogo; Yaakov Zar, CEO of Lev; Byrne Hobart of The Diff; and many more AI founders & exceptional operators coming from places like Anthropic, OpenAI, Anduril, Microsoft, Amazon, Cruise, and more.

Domain Experts, Not Machine Learning Engineers

Building great AI products isn't about machine learning expertise – it's about domain knowledge. You can't build healthcare AI without doctors, legal AI without lawyers, or therapy AI without therapists. The technical barriers to AI development are approaching zero. All that remains is prompt engineering.

PromptLayer is a comprehensive platform for prompt management, evaluation, observability, agent orchestration, and iteration. Subject-matter-experts and technical teams collaborate seamlessly through our prompt CMS.

How We Got Here

Our journey began over a decade ago when co-founders Jared Zoneraich and Jonathan Pedoeem met as high school students competing at hackathons. Jared, who organized the first high school hackathons and later worked at Tecton, and Jon, who published deep learning research and previously founded Evant, originally built PromptLayer for their own personal AI projects. A quick tweet later and the product blew up.

Since then, we've assembled an exceptional team of engineers and community builders who share our vision. We're proud to be backed by Peter Boyce II of Stellation Capital, our first check and earliest supporter, and ScOp VC, whose team built the technology that became Amazon Alexa with a very similar thesis of putting non-technical experts in charge of AI development.

Our approach is already transforming how the best companies build AI products. Gorgias, the leading Shopify helpdesk platform, has built a 60-person AI team around PromptLayer, making thousands and thousands of prompt iterations. Language learning app Speak expanded from 1 to over 11 markets within a year by enabling non-technical teams to iterate on AI features independently. ParentLab completely rebuilt their product around AI coaching, with their lead prompt engineer transitioning from 16 years of teaching to prompt engineering using PromptLayer.

Calling All Prompt Engineers

We believe prompt engineering will become as fundamental to business as using spreadsheets. Every company will need people who can effectively translate domain expertise into AI capabilities. We're not just building a platform – we're defining a new type of knowledge work.

Just as Excel created a new type of work by enabling users to use databases without knowing SQL, PromptLayer is creating a new type of work by enabling subject-matter-experts to build AI without studying neural nets. We call it prompt engineering.

At PromptLayer, we believe that the unicorn companies of tomorrow will not be built by machine learning engineers, they will be built by domain experts.
